Easter Sunday 2024: When Lent changes everything.

Do I ramble here? You betcha.

Will I rant a bit, possibly vent? Probably.

Has consistency ever been my game? There was a time, yes. But we’ll see about now.

Who am I now? A Catholic Woman, working toward sainthood by following a vocation, called by God—wife and mother first, creative soul second—in a world that seems to have turned topsy-turvy.

But now to the real meat of the story. Why am I back here, blogging again? Because I believe God wants me to use my skills as a writer. I’ve known for a while that the direction of my writing wasn’t where I wanted to go, so I’ve floundered quite a bit over the last 3 years. Then a couple weeks ago, a company I’m familiar with called out for writers—Gospel reflections on Sundays. I thought, ‘throw your hat in Bethanne’, why not? If they like it, it’s a sure sign of a good direction to move. Now, as is with all things writing, I wait and see…

I spent this Lent staying off Facebook—for the most part, managing a few groups on Sundays. But I did realize by the time I’d decided to write the Gospel reflection, that social media was pissing me off, on the regular! And I didn’t like being there even though I love to be able to share my life with my family and friends from the past. And then this past week has been one harrowing escapade after another of false FB allegations of copyright infringement of accounts that don’t even belong to me…until finally Facebook disabled my accounts—both my personal and my writing. Done. (wipinghands) The funniest part is that they didn’t bother with the IG account, also a META company, so I don’t know what they will do when they finally realize they’ve made a mistake on FB. But I won’t go back now. It’s like a burden that’s been lifted. Yes, I’ll hold onto the IG, because I do like the contact (I’m an introvert. We LOVE behind the screen connections!). But Facebook can pretty much kiss mine…

And, I was able to tweak my IG account to represent the better Me.

Here’s the thing about my name; it’s Bethanne. Sometimes, on the phone in the south, I let Beth slide, because…you have NO IDEA how hard it is to get people to understand ‘bethanne’ in the somewhat northern accent I have. On the second or third, “What?” I usually say, Beth.

But names are important, and I like mine. So, even when it was suggested the I should find something simpler for my domain—in the end—I just couldn’t not use Bethanne on this round. I’ve had too many years trying to be something that didn’t fit like a glove.

From Bread and Stories to Sewing and Target Practice to growing in Faith, you’ll find all sorts of things to talk about here, and I hope if you find me, you’ll stick around or come back often to visit.

A New Day

It's a new day...
And you'll see some changes around here.
A new header--if you aren't on a feed and actually visit the blog.
Some new coloring--because that's fun.

You know me, I get a little bored. I get anxious about having my personal life out there. My husband prefers anonymity--as in, he'd like to find a cabin in the woods and live off the land, make his own energy with wind, no internt, no television or video games--we won'to go that far, but perhaps I can help. So don't get all confused when you start seeing different things around here.

It was so easy, ten years ago, to think of myself as a nobody. Relatively speaking, I still am. :D hahaha. [just kidding, family. No emails, please, about how I'm a somebody and should I see a therapist] OTOH, selling my second book upped the ante a bit, and I think it's about time to change things up. I've been saying it's time for an official webpage for a few years, but have put it off just because--expense, etc. Why bother?? I have this great blog over here that even has pages!

But when I make a decision to do something...I go full out! No halfsies for this girl. So eventually, if I can't hook this blog up to a webpage, I might have to let it go, too. [oh, that will be a little sad!] And i hate Wordpress!! But I'm willing to be flexible and try new things, if I have to.

Take care this week.
Read a good book.
With Love,
Beth

Took me a while, didn't it?

:D But I'm back!
Of course, with a baby now, I need a schedule.
Otherwise, what you've seen in the last month is what you'll get--NOTHING! Haha.

Give me a few days to put something together.
Enjoy the new design while you're here. I'm loving it!! Thanks to Moira Keith for pointing me in the right direction. I was tired of the old. And this design speaks to me. :D I love the pink.

Can't wait to get into blogging again.
Love,
Bethanne

Blogging outside My Circle

I discovered something in the past few weeks.
Blogging has a hierarchy.

Yes.

It's true.

In a moment of bias, I thought it applied only to the bloggers outside of the writing community. Setting aside my bias, I realized I was wrong. It happens here, too. Take agents, reviewers, published authors VS. aspiring authors.

Here's a for-example: It used to be fun to stop in at certain agent blogs and comment... and I never expected those VERY BUSY agents to reciprocate and come to visit my blog and comment. They might do that for other blogs who rank a wee bit higher on the totem pole, but never for an insignificant writer like myself...who doesn't always blog about writing stuff. There's a catch here. The writers who get the attention of the agents--not necessarily meaning they would get a contract--are the ones who blog about writing...or the industry. The catch being, that as writers, we should be more interested in attracting our readers. Blogging about stuff the reader can relate to.

...where was I? Oh, right. Hierarchy. Well, I've been surfing around on some Diabetes Blogs. Amazingly enough, they are also a dime a dozen. Not expecting a hierarchy there, because most of the blogs I've visited aren't written by doctors or nurses... nope, not even by diabetes educators. Just people like me who have diabetes. So, I was REALLY surprised that they didn't reciprocate. Isn't that part of the blogging world? I mean, who's going to visit you if you don't visit other people? No one will even know you're there unless you are putting your name out there. Though there are a number of ways, blog-hopping is key because it makes you seem friendly. Twittering. Networking. Unfortunately, once you've hit that higher level of Blogdom status, it means you no longer need to do that.

I'm circling here... because I'm not looking to sound like I'm whining. Boo hoo, poor me.. etc. Not that. I guess the root of all blogging is still about me. The journal or diary we kept as a kid. It's now online... and for some reason, we all think that everyone else wants to read it. :D I do have to say, though, that I read every blog post that comes to my inbox, usually enjoying it...but after several tries of network, not succeeding, I rarely go to the webpages and comment.

Not sure if this means I'm a quiter...but a person gets tired of putting out and getting nothing back! :D Seriously, I don't mean here at Romance in Writing. I have wonderful visitors and commentors. FRIENDS who love me and want to know what's going on. It's other places I'm talking about. That at this point are going to remain a personal accountability and journal. It's nice to share with people, and know that they understand where you are coming from... but it's just as nice to do something for yourself, don't you think?

have a great Hump day.
Love,
Bethanne

P.S. There's always the chance that I'm just not in the 'in' crowd over there....maybe everybody does know eachother, and I'm just the new gal, eh? Who knows. I don't have time to figure that kind of stuff out. :P

A critic and a review

I always liked the idea of being a food critic. I mean, what wasn't to like? Food, eating out, food, the power of words...food. I do like food.

Now i'm taking on a new endeavor--books. Photobucket

As with eating food, I've always been a reader. Maybe I didn't learn any sooner than the next kid, but once I picked up on the words, I couldn't seem to stop.

A very good friend of mine, Moira Keith asked me if I'd be interested in reviewing books with her and two other readers on a blog called Romantic Bites. Oh! I got so excited! I thought, how fun that would be. To actually give my opinion on something that I love and to have people who love what I love appreciate it! I imagined the likes of Nora Roberts and Clive Cussler emailing me, begging me to save a spot on my calender for their next big release... Editors at Penguin and HarperCollins would read my scintillating reviews and [on the spot] request a full of my most current manuscript... There would be balloons and tickertape parades. A key to the city!

mmmkkkkkkkkkkkkkkmmmmjjjmmmm..........................ping, ping, ping.

HUH? what? Oh, sorry 'bout that. Fell asleep on the keyboard.

Where was I? Oh right. Reviews at Romantic Bites. Look for new releases and wonderful oldies but goodies. Together, we read everything...and everything we read, we review! I look forward especially to undertaking the contests! Each month one lucky person will win a prize. And for our first month come on over for your chance to win a Gift Certificate to one of the great bookstores located throughout the United States! [that's fancy for, i'm not sure which one it is...Barnes and Noble, Borders, Walden...]
